Celebrating the Films and Characters that Make Movies Fun

2025 Superman Movie and DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters | James Gunn’s Vision

Director James Gunn on the cast and crew of Superman: “It has been an honor.”

Marking the end of filming for 2025’s Superman, James Gunn took to social media with a heartfelt post paying tribute to his cast and crew’s “commitment, creativity and hard work.”

The post continues to state “Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set – and for that I am forever grateful.”

The image accompanying the post is a not-to-miss behind-the-scenes image from the first week of shooting in Norway. Of course, front and center, is David Corenswet on what was previously assumed to be filming for the Fortress of Solitude. To mark the occasion, the Superman actor also posted a clip of himself eating a gigantic chocolate brownie to his Instagram Stories; one clearly fit for a superhero.

It’s also intriguing to note that Nicholas Hoult is in the cast and crew shot as well, which could suggest Lex Luthor will have a part to play in those scenes.

2025’s Superman is set to fly into theaters on July 11, 2025 and kick off the live action portion of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. This opening wave of the rebooted DC universe will consist of five movies and five shows, all overseen by DC Studio heads, Gunn and Peter Safran, and will begin in December with the animated series Creature Commandos.

For our purposes, we will be focusing on the movies coming with the new and improved DCEU. I’m sure it’s going to be confusing to some, with Gunn and Safran introducing a fresh DC cinematic universe, which are sure to be complete with new characters, previously untold stories, and a new timeline. Rest assured, there will also be some familiar faces in the mix as well.

Some of you are aware, there have been major changes made already; Henry Cavill is out as Superman, with the aforementioned David Corenswet (currently on the big screen in the summer blockbuster, Twisters) replacing him as the Man of Steel.

There’s a new Batman flick on the way, as well, and chances are, it won’t be Robert Pattinson in the cape and cowl of vengeance, and this is really just the beginning of what Gunn and company have planned for us.

To assist you in having the full view of what the DCU has, here is what I know about DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. (The DCU Movies)

Superman

Marking the first movie in the new slate, written and directed by James Gunn, it will focus on a younger Superman entering a world of heroes. Per Safran, “It’s not an origins story, it focuses on Superman’s balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He’s the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, he’s kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.

Also along for the ride will be Rachel Brosnahan, putting on her journalist cap as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion will portray Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi is Mister Terrific, Isabel Merced plays Hawkgirl and Anthony Carrigan is Metamorpho. So yeah, it looks like Gunn is already putting together a mini-Justice League. House of the Dragon’s fans will be excited to know that Milly Alcock will appear as Superman’s cousin, Kara, aka Supergirl. Which leads us to….

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

We’ll be getting a new Supergirl movie as well. DC is describing the film as a “science fiction adventure.” Rumors are with the title, it’s likely to be based on Tom King’s comic book series of the same name and will introduce a “Supergirl” most viewers are not used to seeing.

By following, the comic book series, we will see a contrast in the two characters, Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant. While Supergirl was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for roughly the first 14 years of her life.

The Brave and the Bold

DC will also be introducing a new live-action Batman and Robin movie titled The Brave and the Bold, set to be directed by The Flash’s Andy Muschietti. The film based on Grant Morrison’s comic series is truly a story about father and son.

In the comic series, Batman takes in an assassin, murderer who is actually his son that he doesn’t know exists for the first 8-10 years of his life. Gunn is on record explaining it as a “strange father and son story about the two of them.”

Swamp Thing

There is still very little information on the new Swamp Thing movie, but we do know that it will focus on the origins of the mysterious DC character. Audiences should expect it to be tonally darker than the other DC projects. Rumor has Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director, James Mangold reportedly linked to the project.

The Authority

The Authority, which will see WildStorm characters joining the DCU, is our last film to talk about here. As of yet, there is very little to know in regard to what form the group will take, but for sure it’ll have links to Superman and per the official synopsis “see The Authority taking matters into their own hands to do what they believe is right.”

Gunn is on record as saying, “whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments, you know, whatever they want to do to make the world better.”

With all the new DCU news, one could be excused for forgetting that this past week also marked the 10 year anniversary of Gunn’s comic book movie debut for rival, Marvel.

Gunn did not…. again taking to social media

I think I can speak for most people here and say, it has been a great ten years, Mr. Gunn. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride! And I certainly look forward to what’s next.

If you want to catch up on the Guardians of the Galaxy 10 year story, then get hooked on a feeling this way….

As always, if you like what you read, please comment, like, and share. Until next time, I wish you all an enjoyable time at the movies!
