You may remember that the last time Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx shared the screen, they were playing the villainous Miss Hannigan and tech billionaire-turned-adoptee Will Stacks in the 2014 Annie remake. That film musical happens to also be the last time Diaz shared the screen with, well, anyone, as the There’s Something About Mary star took a decade-long sabbatical from acting following Annie’s release. But now Diaz and Foxx are back in the aptly named Back in Action. And before you ask, no, this is not a remake of the Looney Tunes movie from 2003, but rather it’s a Netflix bound spy comedy from writer-director Seth Gordon (known for Horrible Bosses) and co-writer Brendan O’Brien (known for Bad Neighbors). You can check out the newly released trailer below.
”Tonight something clicked,” says Diaz’ Emily to her husband Matt (played by Foxx) at the start of this new trailer, continuing, she says, “for the first time in a really long time I felt alive again.” If I had only known personally that torching bad guys with an improvised flamethrower and nutting ne’er-do-wells could put the spark back in a marriage, I could have been a rich marriage counselor years ago. That’s right, Back in Action casts Foxx and Diaz as two seemingly normal, suburban parents who are hiding a big secret from their kids, the secret, they were once elite CIA agents. Seems like a fun set-up, Mr. & Mrs. Smith meets Spy Kids, but as this first teaser for the film makes clear, Matt and Emily’s cover is set to get blown in a big way, thrusting the couple back into the high-stakes world of espionage as their kids come to the shocking realization that their parents were once cool.
Cue the high-speed car chases, thrilling action, and enough electricity between Diaz and Foxx to power a small country as Matt and Emily find themselves in over their heads and absolutely loving it. The film also sports a killer ensemble, including eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close, Ripley star Andrew Scott, Friday Night Lights’ Kyle Chandler, Fleabag funnyman Jamie Demetriou, McKenna Roberts (Skyscraper), and Rylan Jackson (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves).
Audiences can look forward to catching Diaz and Foxx as they roll, jump, punch, shoot, rappel, and kick butt when Back in Action comes to Netflix on January 17th.
