We’re going back to the turn of the millennium with A24 horror comedy Y2K

Hey, do you remember the Y2K scare, when we were actually afraid that computers wouldn’t be able to process having a 2 in the year instead of a 1, and this would lead to the collapse of society as we knew it? I would dare to say, the target audience for A24’s new horror comedy does not remember that at all. So let me fill you in, that didn’t happen. But what if it did? And what if, worse, the electronics came to life and tried to kill us? That would be da bomb, wouldn’t it? Well, that’s the premise of Y2K, the upcoming A24 horror comedy which had a trailer release earlier this week. Check it out here:

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Kyle Mooney is making his directorial debut, and also wrote the script for Y2K with Evan Winter, and also will appear as a stoner who hangs out with high school kids half his age. The film, itself, is set during a New Year’s Eve party which two uncool high school kids (Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison) crash. When the clock strikes midnight and the electronics go all “Maximum Overdrive” they have to try to save their classmates, and possibly the world. Rounding out the cast we have Golden Globe winner Rachel Zegler, Daniel Zolghadri, Lachlan Watson, Eduardo Franco, Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) and Fred Durst as himself. (The jury is still out on whether the Limp Bizkit frontman will “Break Stuff.”)

Y2K premiered at South by Southwest in March and received acclaim with critics calling it a good time. The film opens in theaters on December 6.
