Hot off of being the studio behind the highest-grossing animated movie of all time with this summer’s Inside Out 2, expectations are sky high for Pixar’s next movie. And the studio that always seems to be one step ahead of the game has set their sights far higher with the original new offering, shooting for the stars, with Elio, a cosmic science fiction adventure from Turning Red director Domee Shi, Coco co-writer and director Adrian Molina, and SparkShorts alum Madeline Sharafian. Newcomer Yonas Kibreab is the titular character coming in alongside the likes of Zoe Saldana, Remy Edgerly, Brad Garrett, Jameela Jamil, and Shirley Henderson, the film looks like a truly out of this world adventure. Only a minute long, but the latest look at Elio is full of promise, evoking the expressive elasticity of Turning Red and Luca, the intergalactic wonder of Wall-E, and the intricately detailed world building that served up Elemental and Soul as amazing visual feasts. And the narrative hook sounds interesting, our young hero, a self-confessed wannabe alien abductee with an Orion Nebula-shaped mole, gets exactly what he has always wanted when he is swept off to an interplanetary organization’s headquarters, and is there tasked with discovering who he truly is and his place in the universe, and most importantly, it feels fresh. The story also feels timely for the current state of affairs in the world, serving up a poignant exploration of what it truly means to co-exist and belong with others from all walks of life.
Pixar’s official synopsis reads like this: “A space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession, Elio’s all in for an epic undertaking when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide. When Elio is mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader, he must form new bonds with eccentric alien life forms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be.”
