Sci-fi Thriller Companion arrives in theaters late this month

Jack Quaid recently asked for audiences already interested in the upcoming film Companion to not watch the latest trailer, stating, “that viewers who are already interested in seeing the movie should avoid the trailer to preserve the element of surprise.” Having watched it now, let me help by saying I agree with him. I will provide it here as a service, but be forewarned, the film will probably be best experienced with as little prior knowledge as possible.

Companion, a science-fiction thriller, is coming our way from writer-director Drew Hancock and the team behind the 2022 horror hit Barbarian, and though more than a year has passed since the project assembled its cast and went into production, it has been shrouded in mystery, that is until just a few days ago. But now that the trailer has been released online and it reveals exactly what’s going on in the film, as I said earlier, I can see why star Jack Quaid has advised potential viewers to avoid the trailer. But again, if you have to know what Companion is absolutely about, go ahead and watch the trailer embedded above.

Or you could just stick to the official synopsis from New Line Cinema – the studio that brought you The Notebook, and the unhinged creators of Barbarian cordially invite you to experience a new kind of love story…

Hancock wrote the screenplay for Companion, and is making his feature directorial debut with the film. In addition to Quaid, the cast of Companion includes Sophie Thatcher, Harvey Guillen, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, and Rupert Friend. Hancock is mostly known for his writing credits which include the hit television series Blue Mountain State, and while he has never directed a movie before, expectations are high for his first outing.

The Motion Picture Association has given Companion an R rating for strong violence, sexual content, and language throughout. Companion releases to theaters on January 31, 2025.
