Jurassic World Rebirth tops my list as the most anticipated Summer 2025 blockbuster, along with three Marvel and DC films in the top five. All in all, I see 17 movies with a good chance of leading the way for a profitable Hollywood summer. Read on to see if your favorites made the cut…

For all of us who love to attend the theater, 2025 has once again gotten off to a slow start, but with recent films such as Black Bag and Novocaine, things are finally looking up for the movie industry. And with the recent release of the full length Superman trailer, this year’s summer blockbusters look poised to pick up the slack and deliver the thrills we’re all craving.
The upcoming season is appropriately packed with plenty of superhero faire, an abundance of horror films, and the return of a couple of action legends. From the rebirth of a legendary park to a look at the world’s most sophisticated sport, here are 17 films you should keep on your radar.

1. Jurassic World Rebirth (July 2, 2025)
Starring Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, and directed by Gareth Edwards, Rebirth takes place five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion where the only surviving dinosaurs occupy tropical islands.
Zora Bennett (Johansson) is recruited to infiltrate the original Jurassic Park for dinosaur DNA where she and her team find a civilian family and a “failed clone-gone-wrong” dinosaur mutant.
With its July 2 release date, Jurassic World Rebirth is perfectly positioned to deliver bank over 2025’s Fourth of July weekend.
2. The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25, 2025)
Count me in as part of the fan base that has been waiting to see the Fantastic Four done right for years. With Marvel’s First Family finally coming to the MCU, hopefully The Fantastic Four: First Steps proves the third time’s the charm. The film definitely boasts what could be the perfect cast in Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Director Matt Shakman also seems to be on board with what the Fantastic Four should be: a comic-leaning, suitably sci-fi adventure that leans heavily on the work of John Byrne and Jack Kirby. The notion that First Steps is set to take place in a parallel universe to the MCU will also give the film more freedom to explore. How the team ends up in the Sacred Timeline is a question for another day, for now, we get to enjoy the team’s first big-screen adventure.
3. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (May 23, 2025)
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will follow on from the evil A.I./missing submarine storyline introduced in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Though there is no official announcement, the finality of the title seems to suggest that this will be the final Mission: Impossible film (or at least the last one featuring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt).
4. Superman (July 11, 2025)
With recent years of critical and commercial failures, the DC Universe is in need of a hero. Fortunately, it has what seems like the perfect remedy in Superman from famed director James Gunn. The first feature-length offering for the new DCU, Superman will be setting the tone for an ambitious franchise reboot. David Corenswet is the latest actor to don the red cape, and he certainly looks the part. As one who never wants to be political, I will just note in regard to how divided we seem to be these days, a straightforward, optimistic adaptation has been long overdue for our hero with the catchphrase Truth, Justice, and the American Way.
5. Thunderbolts* (May 2, 2025)
When Thunderbolts* hits the big screen on May 2, it will be closing the book on Phase 5 of the MCU. I know there has been a great deal of marketing spent on this film, but I have faith that this indie-like blockbuster is perfectly set-up to restore faith in the ailing MCU just ahead of The Fantastic Four: First Steps release in July.

6. Ballerina (June 6, 2025)
With John Wick (Keanu Reeves) seemingly biting the dust in his last outing, the cutthroat action franchise is in need of a successor if the World of Wick is going to continue, and Ballerina may just deliver her. That’s right, her, Ana de Armas stars as Eve Macarro, an orphan who endures grueling training with the Ruska Roma. Under the tutelage of the Director (Angelica Huston), Eve rises through the ranks to become one of the organization’s most feared assassins. Ballerina follows her quest to revenge her father’s murder, and based upon the trailer above, this ballerina should not be underestimated.
Of course, with Ballerina taking place between the events of John Wick 3 and John Wick 4, we are getting a cameo from the Baba Yaga himself. How that all works out for our two characters remains to be seen, but if this Ballerina is graceful enough, the World of Wick could have its ideal successor.
7. 28 Years Later (June 20, 2025)
The sequel to 28 Weeks Later and the third film in the post-apocalyptic horror franchise which began with 2002’s 28 Days Later is finally coming to theaters in June.
Directed by Danny Boyle, the threequel stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes and will follow a father and son who leave a protected island for the mainland. If you can’t get enough of this franchise, you can also look forward to Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which has a January 16, 2026 expected release date.
8. How to Train Your Dragon (June 13, 2025)
DreamWorks is dipping into the trend of live-action remakes with How to Train Your Dragon, which is based on the 2010 animated film of the same name. Marking their first-ever live-action production, the DreamWorks film will star Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid, and Gerard Butler, reprising his role as Hiccup’s father and Berk’s chieftain from the animated series.
If you can’t get enough of the franchise, you might also be interested and eagerly awaiting the opening of the How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk theme park land at Universal’s new Epic Universe theme park.

9. Lilo & Stitch (May 23, 2025)
May 2025’s live-action remake of the 2002 animated film Lilo & Stitch should be a big success for Disney thanks to the heartwarming and hilarious marketing, not to mention the perfectly designed Memorial Day weekend release. The film will star Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani Pelekai, and Zach Galifianakis as Jumba. Disney, also made the wise decision of bringing back the original film’s writer and director to reprise his role as the voice of Stitch.
10. Freakier Friday (August 8, 2025)
More than 20 years after the original, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are reuniting for the sequel to Freaky Friday. The sequel, Freakier Friday, will see Anna Coleman, now a mother herself and Curtis’ Tess, once again body-swapping. But don’t expect it to be that simple, with Disney recently stating that the body-swap will not be confined to just those two.
With the nostalgia for 2003’s original only growing stronger, I expect this follow-up to be a great success. Fans who grew up with that movie, now much like Anna, have their own kids that they can take to see the sequel.
11. Karate Kid: Legends (May 30, 2025)
Building on the solid foundation of the the hit series Cobra Kai which brought the Karate Kid franchise back from the haze of ‘80s nostalgia and into the present day, while repurposing old rivalries for a new generation, comes Karate Kid: Legends.
The first film in the franchise in 15 years, Legends is a loose sequel to the 2010 reboot starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, but it’s also building on the lore of the original trilogy starring Ralph Macchio. Though the film picks up a few years after the events of Cobra Kai, fans of the series should not expect any cameos from the series cast. Chan is returning as Mr. Han with new pupil in the Kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang). When Li crosses a formidable karate champ in New York City, Han joins forces with Daniel LaRusso to prepare Li for an epic martial arts showdown.

12. M3GAN 2.0 (June 27, 2025)
There’s nothing new about sentient androids turned evil, but few films have explored the genre with such gonzo satirical style as M3GAN. With the release of the 2023 film, the world was introduced to a new horror icon in its title character, M3GAN, a cross somewhere between a talking, twerking American girl doll and a T-800. Of course, her murder spree was thwarted at the end of the original movie, but her spirit managed to live on. And in M3GAN 2.0, we find out that everyone’s favorite horror meme is resurrected in order to take down Amelia, the military-grade weapon who was built by a defense contractor who stole M3GAN’s underlying tech. Oh, and she’ll still do whatever it takes to protect Cady. Via the trailer above, I think it’s safe to assume M3GAN 2.0 will be doubling down on the comedy and viral moments in equal measure.
13. F1 (June 27, 2025)
The team assembled for this film is definitely one of credibility. Warner Bros., Apple Original Films, and Dawn Apollo Entertainment, led by seven-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton, are revving up their engines to transport audiences into what appears to be a very realistic view into the world of F1 racing. The upcoming film features an all-star, hardware-heavy ensemble with the likes of Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, and Tobias Menzies. The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski, flying high off of his 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick. The picture follows Pitt as a former racer who is persuaded to come out of retirement to mentor a new driving prodigy played by Idris. To provide its realistic tone, the film was shot during actual Grand Prix weekends and was developed with input from the Formula 1 community and its race promoters.
14. Smurfs (July 18, 2025)
The Smurfs are back on the big screen this summer in the aptly titled Smurfs. This time around, we are in store for a musical, the film even had a running title of The Smurfs Musical at one point. Marking the first Smurfs movie since 2017’s Smurfs: The Lost Village, Rihanna leads a star-studded voice cast in the role of Smurfette, and she’s also on as producer and co-writing and recording the songs.
The film also boasts some heavyweight animation talent behind the scenes with Puss in Boots director Chris Miller and South Park writer Pam Brady. Let down by the previous three outings, I have to say this is shaping up to be a solid reboot. Of course, this summer is packed with big movies, but Smurfs should do really well with families who similarly filled theaters last summer for outings like Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4.

15. The Naked Gun (August 1, 2025)
The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer brings back the bumbling detective Frank Drebin, originally played by Leslie Nielsen in the classic TV comedy Police Squad! and a trio of films released between 1988 and 1994. The man who will be filling Nielsen‘s shoes is none other than famed tough guy Liam Neeson.
16. Elio (June 20, 2025)
Never one to be disappointed by Pixar, I’m pretty excited for Elio, the animated adventure revolving around an 11-year-old boy who is convinced there are intelligent beings somewhere out there in the galaxy, and it turns out he is right. To add to that, these aliens think he’s Earth’s one true leader, and have beamed him up to an interstellar summit so he can represent our big blue planet while a gaggle of extraterrestrials try to avert cosmic catastrophe. The film is co-directed by Adrian Molina and Madeline Sharafian, who both worked on the A Cute Film Addict favorite Coco; and Domee Shi, who helmed the director’s chair for Pixar’s Turning Red.
17. I Know What You Did Last Summer (July 18, 2025)

The 1997 slasher flick pictured above gets a new reboot/sequel. Similarly to 2022’s Scream movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer will serve as a combo franchise reboot and sequel, putting a host of new faces in the path of the killer fisherman with a hook, while bringing back two of the original’s key cast members. Once again ‘90s fan favorites Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are going to be on the big screen together. Watch out kids!
